Heroes of Might & Magic IV
(hx) 01:22 PM CEST - Apr,15 2002

Heroes of Might & Magic IV (HoMM4) is the fourth incarnation of the Heroes of Might and Magic series. For those who never heard about the Heroes series, it's a series of turn-based strategy games that take place in a colorful fantasy world populated by colorful characters and monsters. I have read many HoMM4 previews that claimed that the game will be more than a sequel and it's really true. HoMM4 does not feel like an expensive expansion pack, with all-new engine it plays almost like a new game! HoMM4 combines the old addictive gameplay and adds  many improvements such as new spells, combat and hero system.
The game features ability to lead multiple hero-characters into battle to fight alongside troops for an intense combat experience (each player can control up to 8 armies, each consisting of up to 7 individual hero-characters and/or troops of creatures), 11 starting Hero classes which can progress into 37 advanced classes depending on how you play the game, 9 Hero Primary Skills, each with 3 associated Secondary Skills (27 total), all-new magic and skill system - each skill have 5 levels (36 skills in total) and the magic includes Life, Death, Order, Chaos, and Nature categories,  over 60 varied creature classes in 6 massive campaigns and 24 scenarios, more than 300 adventure map structures to interact with, building caravans (you can transport Heroes between towns), new "Fog of War" map effect, new personal scenarios and map editor and many other.

So how you can see, it's really pretty improved game in comparison with HoMM3, but it still plays like a Heroes game. Simply, it takes almost everything that has ever been great about the series and improves it, only veteran Heroes players will have to unlearn a few old habits due to the new army and hero rules.
Of curse nobody is perfect and also HoMM4 has some problems. First off , HoMM4 ships with unfinished multiplayer mode. Yeah it's quite embarrassing, but 3DO really shipped the game without multiplayer. The retail version allows only a Hotseat option. They also left out some of the nice features of the previous games, so for some hardcore HoMM3 players it can be a step back from HoMM3. For example, there is no hex grids, experience points displayed after battles and even fewer castle-types than HoMM3 has. They also added a map editor but where is Random Map generator? Well, I don't want to bitch this nice game, but to be honest I couldn't skip that.

Overall, despite the unfinished multiplayer (we have wait for a patch), it's more than worthy sequel to Heroes III.  I bet you will spend hundreds of hours with this game anyway :P If you liked the previous installments of the series, I highly recommend you buy this title.

snd: 4/5 - great atmospheric music,  well done sound effects, maybe too much repetitive sounds
gfx: 4/5 - very good, richly detailed landscapes, all-new isometric viewpoint, sweet intro movie, combat animations could be much better, units aren't fully 3D - they are flat sprites, too bright and colorful
playability: 5/5 - addictive, over 120-140 hours of gameplay, well-designed maps, good AI, 3 difficulty levels (adjustable for each map), well done intuitive&informative interface, map editor, Unfinished multiplayer - only Hotseat multiplayer for now, crash problems, small number of individual scenarios, fewer castle-types than HoMM3,  no random map generator, no hex grids
genre: turn-based strategy
release: April 2002
developer: New World Computing
publisher: 3DO

nah 3DO sucked this time

Siege combat is a joke, where have the defensive weapons gone? You cannot destroy walls and the bonuses bestowed to defending missle troops is way too high.

I expected much much more from 3DO, they doing it 2 years and can't do it right???

Overall, I am VERY disappointed by this release. Most offensive is that it is promoted as a multiplayer game yet there is NO multiplay available until a patch. (Who knows when it will appear) In essence, they box deceives customers. I think it is irresponsible, at best, to sell a game and promotes it as multiplayer and not warn people on the box that the multiplay 'feature' has not been implemented! Although some of the game represents an improvement most is a step backwards. Overall, I feel that the series has taken a downturn. The gameplay is pretty standard for those of you familiar with the Heroes series. You build up your heroes and your armies while acquiring resources, artifacts, spells etc. There have been some nice improvements: a lot more spells and skills and some new heroes. Your hero now actually participates in combat actively rather than being limited to spellcasting. He/she can cast spells as well as participate in melee or ranged attacks. It is also much easier for your hero to die in combat since he/she can be actively targeted. Fog of war changes are disasterous! Clear areas grey-out in a few turns. This is a confusing and pointless addition that is most annoying! Castle siege play is gone. Grids are gone! You now must smash down door of castle to enter. No attacking walls with siege weapons. I really liked how in Heroes 3 you could put the movement shadow in during combat, and at the bottom had a list of everything that was going on in the battle. This is gone now, and it is almost impossible to judge how well you will do. The hero's stats don't affect the troops as much as they used to. Also, during combat, I have no idea what some of the symbols mean. Enemies cast spells on you and you don't even know what happened. I don't like fighting. I never used to allow enemies to run away in HOMM3 or use the AutoCombat option, but now I do it all the time to just not be bothered. I'm unable to complete even a simple scenario the gameplay is so tedious. Graphics are a mixed bag. I think that some of the graphics are better. I think that the combat graphics, are better than earlier Heroes 1-III. The huge downturn in graphic quality are the castles/towns. With the original series, especially I and II, when you came to your castle/town, you truly felt like you were 'coming home'. Warmth and color was conveyed beautifully. And, music was welcoming. Castle/town graphics here are boring, dark and drab. You do not feel like you have arrived 'home'. The new town graphics also are not user friendly. It is harder to figure out just what each structure is at a glance. ( I was REALLY very disappointed by the town graphics. The original Heroes I and II had the best musical scores I have ever heard on a computer game! This musical score is mediocre, at best. Boring and inappropriate. The original Heroes 1 and 2 had music that was in-synch with what appeared on the screen, especially when accessing castles. The music was also uplifting and inspiring. Not so with Heroes IV.

Hi! This game is... uhh. Nice design but nothing else. Siege attack? stand close to the wall. The defender can hit the units over it??? And the turrets?? It's funny to move up and down the units on it. Realistic things are good. Like cannot shoot anyone just who You can see. Come on! This isn't the great HOMM!!!

HOMM fanposted - Apr, 19 2002 - 07:17
I think most of the complaints above apart from h/w prob are against changed features and not bad gameplay. all of u complain that it does not feel and play like homm 3 yes bec it is HOMM 4 also apart from castle structure upgrades i dont see any drastic changes in gameplay. other changes were more or less requirements rather than innovations like hero mergers and participation of heros in combat other than magic.

Morphmanposted - Apr, 19 2002 - 19:35
While i can agree with some of these comments i think the game is very good. I played all the Previous HOMM games and i think many many things were fixed in this game. To start, every single skill is useful. In HOMM III i would dread gaining levels sometimes because i would often be forced to choose a totally worthless skill, like healing or scouting. Now, every single skill is useful and makes the game interesting. So that is a great balance upgrade from the previous games in itself. I think all of the races are much more balanced as well. Whereas the last game you pretty much had to choose the titans, black dragons, or angels to win, this game has all of the teams balanced. You can win with every time. I also like how you can pick which creature you want to produce in your town, it makes for another interesting twist. You can customize your army like never before. And the heroes, not TOO powerful, yet not too weak. Let me continue with a few more points. As far as castle combat goes, i like the new system. Although i miss archer towers, i do like the defensive bonuses of being inside the castle, the new line of sight rules for combat, and how you must break down the door to enter the castle. I hear a lot of complaints but isnt it ironic that that is pretty much what you have to do to enter a castle? The spells are good, none of them are almighty and unstoppable (like several spells in the previous games). Potions add for a nice effect. And i do like the fog of war effect. I too am ticked about the Multiplayer not being released yet but its just giving me a little time to hone my skills a bit. I hope that it gets released soon though. So if some of you are reading reviews and all you hear is "it sucks it sucks it sucks", just know that not everyone thinks that. I think it is a great game and ive listed half of the reasons. Good work 3D0, now just get that multiplayer patch released!!

Nitriousposted - Apr, 20 2002 - 23:51
I believe this game is fine. My only complaint would be no upgrading creatures. I like the new hero system, however. I am suprised to see that the campaignes are rather short, and how long it takes one in a campaign to get all of the different castle things available (Such as level 5 creature buildings). Overall, I think it is a nice game.

I was introduced to the HOMM series 4 years ago. I am slightly dissappointed in regards to the siege attacks. I think that some of the above-mentionned comments are too negative, although I respect people's opinions. Hopefully, the multi-player patch will add a totally new dimension to the game, because I find it very boring to play the AI. Good Work 3DO !!!

musashiposted - Apr, 23 2002 - 05:27
I really dissapointed, Why they have to remove creature upgrading? I think creature upgrading is very important for this kind of games

Cogliostroposted - Apr, 24 2002 - 10:43
I didn't think it was physically possible, but this game both sucks and blows at the same time. What in the world happened to the combat screen? How the hell am I suppose to know which creatures are under spells and why did they have to remove the hex grid, now it's just annoying to do the fighting. 3DO better come up with a fix for this, cause this is just not good enough. The only positive thing I have to say about this release is the new way to develop your heroes, this is very good. Other than that this is terrible, and what's with the colors? It's screaming bad taste a long way. Another stupid thing is that you can hire the exact same hero several times, only with different names. Disappointment.

Frater L.V.X.posted - Apr, 26 2002 - 20:19
I've been a longtime fan of the HOMM and MM series, BUT 3DO has really crossed the line this time round. This isn't better than HOMM III and add ons. THIS PLAINLY SUCK BALLS.

Dissapointedposted - Apr, 27 2002 - 06:41
The game might be OK if it would work. I tried it on two different Win XP machines with standard HW and the app just stops running randomly and kicks me back to the desktop. I just submitted a trouble ticket, but from what I see, 3DO doesn't have an answer. They advertise XP compatibility, but I think they might be full of themselves. If I don't hear anything good, there are several copies from my group that are getting returned.

Big Time Heroes Fanposted - Apr, 27 2002 - 21:11
I have been a fan since King's Bounty. I loved all of the previous installments, each one got better - but not this one. Not counting the fixes it needs (game crashes all the time bringing me back to desktop, but in one of the campaigns) Heroes 4 is a big dissapointment. It's impossible to tell what spell enemy is under in combat. And when I fire arrow shooters, I don't know what going on it happens so fast. The colors are ridiculous, why didn't they keep it simple. The towns have no character and there's no grid. I guess it's because 3Do had to lay off all those people and bring in new development team. This is the last stop for me unless a patch fixes this game big time. I do like the added spells and the heroes and the prisons, but overall, it sucks big time. Going back to Heroes 3 never to return.

Lorenzoposted - May, 06 2002 - 19:31
This is the first HOMM game that I really dont' like at all, bad graphics than HOMM3 (better animation BTW) confusing GUI, few (good) game improvement but a lot of steps back. This isn't HOMM at all(talking about the deep soul of the game), it's another game, not so bad, but comparing whit HOMM I/II/III this is the worst edition. I'll go back to HOMM III waiting a HOMM V (if any). If you are a newcomer could be fine, but if you liked the other editions stay away from this game.

Navposted - May, 23 2002 - 07:55
I can't believe how negative all you people are. It's a great game, with some very nice improvements. Listen to Morphman too :P All I would have wanted is more maps really, I don't mind missing multiplayer. Campaigns are ok but the thing I always liked best about the series was the hotseat mode. Nothing like playing with a few friends, plotting against them while they're in the same room :p, sharing the fun generally. Put your presumptions aside and don't mind what others think.

yo mommaposted - May, 31 2002 - 07:18

Valposted - May, 31 2002 - 14:12
well i must say i was waiting for this game and i expected very much from 3DO - after i installed it and started for the fist time - it was a shock - the game is too overloaded with things that make the gameplay too complicated - the toolbar is too huge - if you take bigger resolution you can't see shit - Game uninstalled :P new version is not always better then old one -this game is an example

Jaroposted - Jun, 06 2002 - 15:40
It's a good and impressive game. Those, who find it complicated, overloaded or cannot finish any simple scenario, should play SuperMario. I miss just absence of humor from former releases.

This games is just ok 3 was better. But for thouse of you who are havin a problem getting kicked out all the time (I did) Try setting you sound accerlation in control panel down to minium ( this maks some of the music sound better (no echo) and makes it a little more stable. I Do like the more involved story lines in the campaings and the ability to have the maps change when you are making your maps (thus you could have say a fire elements quest cause the forest to burn or a town can be razied. allows a lot more freedon of story. Combat does suck though and i auto whenever possable. I hate that when i autocombat I lose so much mana and I counted it never adds up to spell combanation I can follow odd ... I Hope They realy take to fixing this games shortcommings

my gaming tendencies have died off a lot in the recent years and i usually buy one game a year nowadays.. anyhow, i expended my dollars on this one, having been a fan of the prior four, and it wasn't bad. some complaints (re: seige is way too difficult), but overall a quality game. developing heroes is a major plus. don't care much for the high flash, graphics engine demanding dreck that hits the market these days, and i enjoyed this game much more than my previous purchase (civilization iii). different strokes for different folks i guess.

There is nothing complicated about this game, Hell even my 10 year old brother plays this game like a pro. every game has faults, maybe siege engines just didn't fit in with the new world. I'm about to tell you something thats very important for the future of your gaming spirit. THIS IS A GOD DAMN GAME!!! G-A-M-E get it?

HOMM, HOMM II, HOMM II: The Price of Loyalty, HOMM III: Restoration of Erathia, HOMM III: Armageddon's Blade, Heroes Chronicles, HOMM III: Shadow of Death, HOMM III: WOG. HOMM and me, we have a long history together. But when I installed HOMM IV, I hated it. I was scared, how could I hate a HOMM game? At first, I didn't even dare to mention it. I was in total denial. I tried playing more and more but nothing. I searched the web and saw many people going at each others throats debating this. To be honest I was a little reliefed, maybe I wasn't the only one who felt this way. Sure the game is playable, sure his 10 year old brother could play it like a pro and maybe some people found it even a better installment over the rest of the series. But this is not the point is it? HOMM I-III got me hooked instantly with something magical about them. Many sleepless nights and it still felt magical, sure boring at times but always felt captivated. The monsters were big and lush like made out of fairy tales, the unreality of the spells made everything even more fairy like. The magic has been lost and HOMM IV seems to me more like the other games.. maybe HOMM V will stop being an RPG and become like C&C.. those things sell like hot cake. As for me I am keeping my HOMM III complete CDs safe and will be turning to PS2's Final Fantasy online.

Looks like i was to late, im meet the HOMM to late, and now when i want to test HOMM IV, then is gone, its not in the stores of Iceland any more, thats the thing about Iceland, if peoble stops buying, the shoops stop selling, they just dont think about stop ordering and sell the rest of the game they have, no they just give up, ok enough of that, i cannot even find a smallest demo nor a clue about where i can buy the game, i would do much just for a small demo, but there is nobody, i must just try using the ODC but thats going rather slowly! I hope i wont miss HOMM V, Becouse i love the might and magic and speacialty Heroes of might and magic, i just hope that HOMM V will fit in my computer, but i hope that homm V vill still be R.P.G. and strategic in the same,

Well, it's a good game. Quite a good game with damn wonderful music. But. It is NOT a HOMM, god, it just isn't. I completely agree with silverarrow, this game has no magic, and I'm not talking exactly about the spells the heroes have. It is not. It's hostile and apathic compared to the others (I didn't play Heroes II, but I played the others for a long time - hey, I recently rescued III and am playing it again), mayvbe because the new graphics are so... "realistic", that don't pass for fantasy at all. And for the people who did not play the old games, believe me: HOMM IV is good as a game, but if you want a real HOMM, get the III. Please.
