Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
(hx) 07:18 PM CEST - Jul,21 2002

Since Blizzard Entertainment has been on the PC market, this gaming company has set new standards games, everything from Warcraft, to Diablo, to Starcraft (and even their expansions) has been nothing but top notch, so it's no wonder the excitement created three years ago when Blizzard announced that Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos was in development. Seems this game was already a bestseller the day it was announced, a good proof being the 4.5 million pre-ordered copies until the 3rd of July 2002, the date when the game was launched. Yeah now is Blizzard's fantasy-themed RTS game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, sequel to Warcraft II (1996), finally available at stores worldwide and definitely lives up to its expectations.

Yeah, I finally wrote a review of Warcraft III, but, before you read on, please sit down and take a glass of your favourite drink... The game insist on many of the real-time strategy conventions you're probably familiar with by now, but in case you're unfamiliar with the original Warcraft games (shame on you!), they've traditionally set orcs and humans against each other in neverending bloody battle, with gameplay that involves great story, managing resources and production, as well as micromanaging battles and point&click combat. In case of need you can also use predefined keyboard hotkeys to quickly perform some actions. You have to gather resources, build this building to get that unit, upgrade this building to upgrade that unit, build up a force of various units, and use that force to destroy the enemy's base and to repel any invasions against your position etc etc. How I said, just like in other real-time strategy games, there's no need to continue.

If you are Warcraft veteran gamer you probably want to know what's new in Warcraft III, or would you rather not know? ;) Well, Warcraft III at its basics won't surprise anyone terribly much, but Blizzard added some nice improvements that I should mention. The biggest difference between Warcraft III and its predecessors is that the game now features a fully 3D graphics engine, for the first time in Warcraft history you will have a chance to see any massacre on the screen in richly rendered 3D graphics. Both orcs and humans are entirely rendered in 3D now, even game's menu screens are vibrantly colored and fully animated, and the game's ability to zoom in/on  a scene makes the beauty of the game that much more obvious. The game features four playable races,  the well-known "orcs" and "humans", but also two new additions - the Undead (consists mainly of demonic and zombie-like creatures, ability to raise the dead of the fallen enemy warriors) and the Night Elves (they rely on stealth, hero/unit abilities and ranged attack), each race is nicely balanced in terms of strengths and weaknesses, with the interesting addition of resource gathering abilities to the mix of differences. Each race has three heroes (such as the Archmage, Death Knight and Demon Hunter) and each hero is from a different sub-race or school of magic/thought than each other. While in the campaign heroes are pre-selected and central to the plot, in multiplayer you can play with max three heroes. Of course, you don't have to play a hero in multiplayer, but it wouldn't much smart because all hero units have the ability to gain experience and become more powerful as well as equip useful items. Your  heroes have a six-slot inventory for items, which are little treasure chests that are hidden around the map or available from merchants scattered around the maps. As heroes progress in the game, they "level up", RPG-like. Heroes do have a learning curve, so they start from level 1 all the way to level 10. In addition to heroes being naturally tough, very strong and hard to kill, each hero has 3 special skills or abilities and one ultimate skill/ability. Heroes are remarkably powerful and flexible characters, and their presence changes the mechanics of the game dramatically.

Another new and prominent feature is the "Upkeep" which causes your gold miners to generate less income the more units you have. SWhy Blizzard did it? Well, needless to say that resources must be carefully managed, so as your population grows an "Upkeep" penalty automatically skims a percentage of the resources gathered by your gold miners. This encourage you to think hard (woohoo you will need your brain!) about what you are building instead of pumping out a stack of more powerful units that require more resources. To make the gameplay even more innovative, there is also a food limit of 90, which means there is a limit of how many combat units you are allowed to create in one game. This concept encourages smart army building, not just clicking on the build unit button and throwing whatever you have into the heat of battle. Your armies in Warcraft 3 tends to be no larger than 30-40 units maximum! Many Starcraft players will probably find this frustrating at first (in Starcraft, the supply limit was set at 200), but it’s not StarCraft II and plays very differently from  StarCraft :)

Single Player

Warcraft III single-player starts with a tutorial composed of two training prelude missions as the Orcs and only after completing those, you begin the singleplayer campaigns for each race (Human, Orc, Undead and Night Elf). The single player campaign is one of the most notable features of Warcraft III, there are over 33 missions with 3D engine based plot-driven cut-scenes and cinematical movies (one of the best cinematics I have ever seen in the game) between them. The game progresses through missions which you must complete in order to access the next. After each successfully completed mission you'll get a cutscene that keeps you motivated enough to play another one. The game strictly follows a linear path, it mean you must play each race as the story unfolds through the campaigns - you won't be able to pick your a race (Orc, Human, Undead and Night Elves) and play the game right through.

Each mission has markedly different objectives, ranging from the usual destruction of enemy bases to finding an artefact, escorting troops or protecting a hero. Of course heroes plays a dominant role here, they gain experience levels from combat and retain their skills and any items that they find from one mission to the next. Besides these main quests which are necessary for finishing a mission, there are secondary quests that can ease your mission or give you precious artefacts for your heroes. Sadly these secondary quests do not bring you a non-linear campaign. The single player scenarios can be played under the normal and hard difficulty. On normal difficulty, the missions aren't very tough that making the game more accessible to new strategy gamers. Overall, the single player missions are pretty long (~25 hours) and very well done.

Multiplayer
The multiplayer mode allows you up to dozen of your friends joining in, through a LAN connection (there is no TCP/IP support) or over the Internet on the new and improved Battle.Net (free). So you are restricted only to LAN and Battle.net. Warcraft III multiplayer features 40 odd maps included in the retail release of the game, one hero for free (each additional hero costing you 500 gold), and many expanded multiplayer options over Battle.net such as shared unit control between players, trading of resources between players, choice of army color, observation mode, ability to ally with computer players,  new ladders including 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, and clan ladders, improved game filtering options, anonymous matchmaking for games, improved ladders that prevent "win trading" , separate name space for Warcraft III (net allows players to obtain new account names without conflicting with those in previous games), improved clan support with levels of membership, home clan channels and clan ladders and many more. There is not much to say, free Battle.Net is probably the number one reason to get this game as well as multiplayer Warcraft III works well, as most Blizzard games do. Plus, needless to say that Battle.Net is still one of the most successful online game services around.

Overall
To write a final word is pretty easy for me this time. Simply, Blizzard has done it again! Warcraft III is definitely a one of the best RTS game to date. If you have been waiting for that next great game and you have a money, then run out right now and buy Warcraft 3. If you are rich, get the $80 collector's edition, this special package is worth the price and including the CD soundtrack, a large trade paperback book featuring the game's artwork, a DVD of the game's CGI cut-scenes (much better quality than compressed DivX). But don't buy Warcraft III because you’re expecting something entirely innovative, you’ll probably be disappointed. The bottom line is that $60 is a lot of money for a single game :( Also that's why only 88%.

Recommended hardware (PC)
600 MHz processor, 256 MB of RAM, 32 MB 3D video card, DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card, Multiplayer: Low-latency, active Internet connection rated at 28.8 Kbps or faster.   LAN play requires TCP/IP connection

Minimum hardware (PC)
400 MHz Pentium II, 128 MB of RAM, 8MB 3D video card (TNT, i810, Voodoo 3, Rage 128 equivalent or better) with DirectX 8.1 support, 700 MB HD space, 4X CD-ROM drive

snd: 5/5 - voice acting along with the unit speech types are outstanding, great sound effects, uniquely fitting musical accompaniment, but only 3 songs per race during the match
gfx: 4/5 - very colorful in a cartoon style, excellent cut-scenes - one of the best cinematics I have ever seen, each unit has plenty of animations,  very realistic environmental lighting effects, relatively low system requirements, camera rotation and movement is a bit limited, relatively low system requirements, might seem a bit dated nowadays with a bit of blockyness (3+ years of development)
playability: 5/5 - incredibly fun to play (though can be frustrating for someone - requires some brain activity in a player), superb story, atmosphere, addictive and replayable (like other Blizzard games), mixes RTS with RPG, powerful Warcraft III world editor, well done game controls, campaign is full of surprises and transits between the four races, well balanced units, pretty stable with no issues, up to 12 players in multiplayer via battlement or LAN(no TCP/IP support), you can't select more than 12 units at a time, lack of a difficulty setting for AI opponents in multiplayer/skirmish battles
genre: RTS
platform: PC, Mac
release: July 2002
developer: Blizzard
publisher: Vivendi
Excellent
Overall: 88%

totally forgot to mention that WarCraft3 is something inovative. I suggest you look at custom maps like TowerDefence, Missile Command (I know the guy www.mr123.idlegames.com), Sniper Elite. Check those maps out and then try to say it is not inovative. Those maps blurr the game barriers.

Whay took gameguru so long to post a review? Ahem, well... excellent game, excellent gameplay, but i found it to be a bit lacking in terms of varying the units.

Well it's pretty nice consider the new gameplay styles that are added but still falls short when compared against battlerealms!!!

Bad graphics? Put the crack pipe down and stop looking at it through 16 bit colour. You're probably the type that likes shoot 'em ups anyhow.

dTdposted - Jul, 22 2002 - 12:34
I was disapointed in this game. I believe the move to a 3d engine was a bad one and set the stage for the whole small army count and food limit as they couldn't render enough units to make it larger. There are far too many cutscenes and somehow this game has lost the humor blizzard is famous for. It seems very serious, the cutscenes very dramatic. At 41 years old, I miss the lightheartedness of war2.

"I can see my house!" "We've got explosives !" heh, the memories....

Crapposted - Jul, 22 2002 - 13:48
The graphics look good only on screenshots, if you play the game you come to see that they are terribly bad. The Gameplay is boring, repetitive, uninspiring. The Micro-management is ridiculous, by the time you activated a God-feature, you're allready too late. It sucks terrible, Command&Conquer was miles ahead of this pile of hype, even if it a few years ago by now.

magaposted - Jul, 22 2002 - 13:50
mr. Crap, warcraft is a legend, c&c is a legend too, a totally different one.

Flameposted - Jul, 22 2002 - 14:41
Yes C&C was a legend with human hero's, while Warcraft has gods and other childish stuff, some lameasses that can make lightning and stuff, as you see with hundreds of other lame titles.

ImNotthatkindofOrcposted - Jul, 22 2002 - 15:43
Oh man..the things those characters in WC3 say though! Funny as hell! Especially the Dryad from the night elves "I'm so wasted!"

DaGenposted - Jul, 22 2002 - 16:17
hm.. Wc3 might be a bit more serious than other blizz titles (altough im not quite shure bout that) but anyway, there s still a lot of humour involved.. The unit speech is just Crazy & i still like the way critters explode when you click on them too much :) Furthermore I can respect others opinions but am afraid that I do not agree on the graphics part.. I think the 3d was a great step and the engine is good and clear enough. And as for being the reason for the low unit counts, I believe it might have something to do with it but still I respect the limit idea since it enables a more tactical game instead of mass mayhem (cfr TA.. Great game but another way of playing!) Anyways, tnx blizz for the great game.. Ill be of now; map making & playing some! Greetz

Retired C&C fanposted - Jul, 22 2002 - 17:22
If you guys knew half of the crap that WS gives out then you would know that this game, and it's creator, are both godsends. First of all the gameplay actually requires brain activity, so that part right there is exactly why 'crap-crap' doesn't like the game. C&C, and all it's counterparts(ie: RA, RA2, TS) all were fun, I'll admit, but the thing that turned me away from them, I have them all because I used to like WS and C&C, is that after they sell you the game and support it for a month, they just abandon you until their next game comes out. Seriously if you were to go to their forums and look around for 5 minutes you would see that their games are all cheat infested and the worst thing it that WS does not care. In fact they subliminally encourage it because they refuse to let someone make an antri-trainer patch for their games because they simply don't care anymore. If you were to experience that for a very long time and then see this new hope in ga,ming(Blizzard:Warcrafgt 3) then you would realize that this is an awesome opportunity. When I got WC3 I thought the the graphix were amazing. WS tried to make a 3D RTS(Emperor:Battle for Dune) and it failed miserably, not only in sales but also in multiplayer due to very crappy servers. This game is not only very graphically superior but also very fun. Very tactical because there are so many different options you can take for winning. And the unit limit is very good, no more games with 45 of each type of unit and battles with all the units coming together and trying your hardest to micro it. Crap-Crap, Basically what I am trying to say is that you people that don't like this game should explain why you don't like it in regular terms. You don't because your pc isn't up-to-date so therefore your graphix don't look as well which causes your opinion to fall. As for dTd, Sure it may be a more serious version of Warcraft 3 but the loss of humor is made up for with the gigantic funfactor and strategic potential in the game. Peace

When I started to play the war3 beta, I was impressed, graphics were decent and gameplay also was good. But with the release of the final (store version), it seems like somthing is missing. I am not sure if it was just the timing of the game, seems like a long time ago now when I was playing the BETA. And with the realease of WC3, I have found myself NOT to buy the game, and stick with the good ol' classics like Counter-Strike (ya ya i know shoot em up game, but it's good), and Total Anihilation. I will never get bored of that game. Hopefully in the next 'game' of warcraft the ante' will be uped and better ALL AROUND gameplay can and will be achived. Oh, also, I did love WC1 and WC2. so iono why WC3 was such a let down.

I think System shock 2 and freespace 2 are the best and counterstrike of course. this is ok but RA2 is the best. I havent played WAR 3 that much tho..total annihilation, isnt that like 8 years old?

the singler player in this game is great.the multy player sucks,Ihate the hot keys. You cant grab more than one peon and make it build, you have to grab one no hot keys for town center or its =list goes on and on to much to say. battle net sucks the game matching system is a joke a level 1 can vs a 12

Scott Hposted - Jul, 23 2002 - 14:50
Lost the humour? You're mistaken. Try clicking on a single unit a whole bunch of times, and you'll find that they start saying things they don't ordinarily say. Quite funny actually.

System_Dposted - Jul, 23 2002 - 16:45
Funny comments? ya some of the characters say some cool stuff but that's pretty much the only thing going for the game. There is way 2 many cutscences and not enough real movies ( not 2 mention the very last movie in the game was short and boring ). The battle net is a real joke the matches are so un fair it's not even funny. The new food limit isn't there 4 more strategy effect it's becuz this new enging can't handle many units on the map at the same time.

Ryukenposted - Jul, 24 2002 - 15:43
WarcraftIII is a VERY serious candidate for the game of the year. All who disagree know nothing about REAL RTS games. Just like Starcraft was the best RTS ever, this game is almost even good. And what the hell are ye whining about the fact that there are too few CGI-animations? Even without them the game would still rock, but Blizzard is the only firm in the bussiness who like to give the gamers that little extra. So stop complaining, if you know another game who has better CGI-animations, plz tell me then.(and don't talk about FF, Manga as CGI sucks) It is even very shameful that Gamegurumania didn't give a score of at least 90%. I still enjoy the game, and so should you do!

lol! WC3 is the best RTS ever made it meets everything i ever thought it would i only have 2 complaints 1: the heros should be able to advance to higher lvls 2: you can't que up orders (like in Warlords Battlecry 2)

Micheal Sanchezposted - Jul, 25 2002 - 04:22
This game rules! when you do the everthing in *high* option in the video option. the 3D simply is outstanding. The custcenes makes warcraft3 make the storyline alot better and that rocks! Although there isin't enough 'long cuscenes' called interlude. The multiplayer just rules. Even if i suck, every race is just pure fun. and i got this game when it released. It's very balanced except some little stuff such as hunteress need to be rebalanced but in general it is balanced. The replaybility is great too! It will last until another RTS games comes (probably starcraft2) Also, the food cap (90) and the upkeep that blizzard made, is simply ingenius. I feel this game is made only for me. I give this 9.5 My only gripe is that, it cost 90$. {canadian}

Micheal Sanchezposted - Jul, 25 2002 - 04:27
btw to the guy who said match making is a joke. ( a level 1 against level 12) OooO someone knows his warcraft3. actualy wait WRONG. That's impossible. the maximum is level 1 against level 6. AND IT IS VERY VERY RARE. there can only be 6 levels of difference bettwen the minimum leveled guy and the maximum leveled guy Also to all persons that say this game sucks, go buy a new tongue to have a new taste in games because this is the game of the year. Find me 1 review site (not some amateur site) that gave less then 8.5 frankly this site is the 2nd lowest scored site. Lowest i saw is 8.7 and i saw around 39 of them.

What the ...? Alright to everyone who complains about graphics I will repeat what rest of the people told you. Get new HARDWARE this game is intensive and yes foo limit of 90 is there for two reasons, 1st new engine and 2nd new strategies. Too much micro? Get over it. Also if you have decent card and are playing undead build up your base then zoom-in all the way and look at all the little details like Necropolis and the way it breathes. Everything in that game is detailed, notice how your vision is limited and woods actually look darker after the first row. Or try this zoom in, order your units to move select one click on the portrait and hold. And as for hunts that need to be rebalanced. If you play NE go in and harras him right of the start don't let them build up. :P Otherwise just be quiet and return the retail copy and as for you warez puppies STHU and don't complain. Simple.

i liked the SP part but MP sucks. What's up with this food limit and shit? It would be OK if the units werent worthless.. A full scale battle last about 30sec to 1min... woooohoo... funny. Fuck wc3, long live StarCraft! (i'm really disappointed... i have been waiting long for this game and had no idea that it would be this boring and worthless in MP) If Blizzard does the same with StarCraft2 i'm gonna kill myself... I downloaded some cheats and removed the foodlimit. that made it playable for about 2-3h... Oh, almost forgot the graphics suck... the units look like Lego-men. WHY o WHY aren't there any good games out there these days??? People still play Half-Life! The game i 4yrs old or something like that! And you have to buy a goddamn NASA computer to play the crap... When I first purhased Half-Life I had a 350mhz... Now I have a 1400mhz and I have low FPS (60-70) That says it all! If ppl still are playing a 4year old game, somethings wrong! and they are not playing it because of nostalgia but because it is the most popular game around!!! Help me Doom3, you're my only hope

Blizzard countinues to challenge the gameing industry with great games that stretch the limits of hardware, platforms, and creativity. The character of the game and its population taps deep into the magination of players. This game clearly demonstrates the need for more creativeity and customizability in other games. Cool special effects and fast fps is not all a good game needs.

I enjoyed this game so much i completed it from start to finish twice. If you have not even played some kind of demo of this game by now, your a backwards hill billy. This game is funny and enjoyable to play. Graphics are easy on the eyes. You require atleast half a brain to play this, if your brain dead there are plenty of doom clones out there, some may still be above your grasp.

Hey Guys! dont read what that dumb crap wrote about Warcraft 3. The games great, great graphics and really good story line...on the whole a very good strategy game. Yes! no game is perfect and Warcraft 3 has lost it on the food limit. it sucks to conquer an enemy with just 20 ogres. But the game is still good.

Please dont slag off this game with comments like "yawn" "crap" etc when you obviously have not played it enough. FACT 1 FASTEST SELLING PC GAME OF ALL TIME - sorry but no amount of hype can generate those kind of sales (you silly kids). FACT 2 THE GAME WAS DESIGNED TO BE PLAYED ONLINE AGAINST OTHER PPL: so if your a lonley modem boy or didnt actually purchase the game then its true meaning is forever lost to you and you have no right to comment. FACT 3 THIS GAME IS NOT C&C AND WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE. So stop moaning that your small brains can only remember one strategy game interface and that if a game isnt a C&C clone then its crap. I HAVE SPOKEN

sigh, Crappy graphics? what u running? a voodoo? hahah... sigh, C&C cant beat this game, no way, not in its lifetime, renegade was a failure, RA was so unrealistic, RA2's expansion was total crap, and RA2 it self wall overwhelmingly idiotic... squids and dolphins.. heh... The fact that so many people buy the pirated version of this game completely spoils it. Yet, Warcraft 3 could still get the fastest selling PC game of all time is incredible. sigh, without a food limit like C&C u'd probably have too much stuff, and the game wont finish till someone runs out of gold or lumber... which is stupid... the game is still fast paced, u are supposed to attack ur enemies often, vice-versa, not stay in your base and build only peasants...

This is funny. You make fun of the multiplayer. Compare it to westwoods multiplayer. Bnet kicks every other free operating multiplayer system out there. And the graphics for this game is amazingly good for a freakin rts game. Sure there are games out there with better graphics BUT THOSE ARENT RTS GAMES. THIS IS TOP OF THE LINE PRODUCT. Im not surprised though knowing it came out from Blizzard.

THIS GAME FUCKING SUCKS !!! After starcraft I expected much more from blizzard. Almost every aspect of the game is entirely stupid. The food limid sucks ass, races are not balanced. Hero idea is retarded. It used to be a good damn strategy, and they comletely fucked it up by adding an "RPG element". And graphics and animation are far from great. A waste of 20 bucks.
