Verified open-source tools remove artificial FP16/BF16 limits on GeForce cards - October 2026

Enthusiasts have released open-source tools that remove NVIDIA’s artificial limit on FP16 and BF16 Tensor Core performance on GeForce RTX 30 and 40 series cards. The unlock needs no BIOS flash and no permanent driver changes. A Linux kernel module runs before the official driver loads, adjusts hardware speed selectors, and then lets the normal driver take over. Results so far are preliminary and mainly tested on Linux.

On an RTX 3090 Ti, BF16 matrix performance rose from 87.5 to 157.4 TFLOPS (about +80%). An RTX 4090 went from roughly 165.5 to 330.6 TFLOPS in BF16, nearly doubling. Real-world AI tests show faster prompt processing and some image-generation workloads (roughly 14–36% or higher in reported cases). Token generation speed usually stays about the same because it is often limited by memory bandwidth rather than pure compute. Gaming performance is not expected to improve.

Ed.note: The Ampere limit is a pair of volatile speed selectors, not a setting stored in the VBIOS. The working method writes them from a Linux module before the NVIDIA driver binds, and a full power-off puts them back. Overwriting the VBIOS does not change that rate, and because the image is signed, a bad flash can leave the card unable to boot even if you kept a backup. A Linux flash drive only helps if it runs that early step and does not rewrite the ROM.

I’ve just written this little utility - it’s not a finished product, just a preview of what it might look like if the problem could be solved on Windows. Don’t worry about running it; it doesn’t write anything to your system or make any changes. As I explained earlier, this program can’t be developed any further because, technically, it’s just not possible to do it this way :-( Hopefully, someone with more time than I have will write a preloader so that it can work on Windows 10/11 as well.

Microsoft confirmed a long-running bug in Windows 11 Universal Print.

Printers that were set up on Windows 10 can stop working after the April 2026 update KB5083769 or later. Users see the error “Your printer has experienced an unexpected configuration problem. 0x80004005” and the Print button stays disabled.

Microsoft says the problem affects these upgraded devices and is not fixed by moving to Windows 11 26H2.

The only current workarounds are to remove and re-add the printers, or run Microsoft’s Convert-UpPrinterToPerUser.ps1 script to switch them to per-user mode. Admins have had to apply the manual fix for months.

Reports claim that Gears of War: E-Day cost more than $500 million to develop, not including marketing. Kotaku cites an unnamed source familiar with Xbox’s business for the figure, which exceeds earlier rumors of a $400 million budget from Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson.

Analyst firm Alinea Analytics estimates the game sold roughly 230,000 copies in its first week across Steam and Xbox, generating about $37 million in revenue. Microsoft has not released official sales or budget numbers for the title.

Alinea also estimates that around 1.7 million people played the game through Xbox Game Pass, with many paying extra for early access. The high reported development cost and modest early sales have raised questions about the game’s commercial performance as an Xbox exclusive.

NVIDIA has shipped RTX 3090 graphics cards with BF16 tensor math running at half speed for six years. The driver reports this as FMLA32 = 1/2, and NVIDIA’s own specifications list BF16 with FP32 accumulation at roughly half the rate of FP16.

A Linux kernel module called gpu-unlock, created by developer Zagitta, flips the setting to full speed before the NVIDIA driver loads. After a cold boot, cards report FMLA32 = full. One user measured the BF16 tensor pipe jumping from 82 to 155 TFLOPS on the same hardware, driver, and power limit.

Real-world gains are smaller but still useful. On a Qwen model in the Strata inference engine, prefill speed improved by about 10–12 percent. Outputs stayed identical to the stock run. Independent tests and Windows UEFI ports of the same method have shown similar roughly 1.8–2× gains on BF16 and FP16 tensor math with FP32 accumulation.

The module does not change clocks, power limits, or permanently alter the card. Community reports say it mainly helps workloads heavy on BF16 matrix multiplies, such as image generation, some speech and music models, and certain training steps. LLM decode speed sees little benefit because it is usually limited by memory bandwidth.

NVIDIA has not commented on the module. The half-speed setting matches official published rates for consumer Ampere cards.

Electronic Arts announced on October 21, 2026, that it is closing BioWare and canceling the next Mass Effect game, which was still in early development. The project was first teased in 2020 with a trailer at The Game Awards.

A day later, a trailer for the canceled game leaked on Reddit. The video claims to show in-engine footage made with pre-production assets and reveals the title Mass Effect: Universe. It features a new protagonist meeting an Asari in a bar, along with brief action scenes and a cameo from Liara.

Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier and IGN have both confirmed the trailer is real and was created by the BioWare team before the studio closed. EA has not issued an official statement about the leak. The footage gives fans a short look at a project that will no longer move forward.
