GOG Gives Away State of Mind Free Until Thursday - freegame
(hx) 05:24 PM CEST - Sep,07 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
GOG is giving away State of Mind, the 2018 sci-fi adventure from Daedalic Entertainment, as a free DRM-free PC title.

The game is set in Berlin in 2048 and follows journalist Richard Nolan after his family vanishes, in a story about transhumanism, surveillance, and a split between a rotting physical world and a polished virtual one.

The offer is live now and ends Thursday, 10 September 2026 at 16:00 EEST (15:00 CEST).

Claim it with a free GOG account and it stays in your library - this is the full game, not a demo or a timed trial.

GOG lists the Windows, macOS and Linux versions; the store page marks it “Now on giveaway” and rates it 3.8/5 from 63 user reviews.
LG OLEDs Still Listen After the Screen Goes Dark - briefly
(hx) 05:16 PM CEST - Sep,07 2026 - Post a comment / read (2)
Gamers Nexus, working with Level1Techs and outside researchers, published a long test of retail LG OLED sets including the G5. Packet captures showed the TVs scanning the home network for phones and watches that were not part of the test, plus nearby Wi-Fi names and signal strength.

After a voice-assistant trigger, the microphone kept capturing audio while the screen looked off, and spoken lines showed up as plain-text logs on the set.

When Ethernet was pulled, those logs stayed on the TV and went out after the cable went back in.

LG has previously said its TVs do not collect, record, or store ambient conversations; the testers say the post-command window and local transcripts cut against that comfort.

LG had not issued a fresh reply to this video at the time of the recaps.

The GPU Madness Has Come To This - 9070 XT vs. 5060 Ti 16GB - tech

By comparing the Radeon RX 9070 XT and the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB across a 52-game benchmark suite, Steve analyzes how these hardware options perform relative to their retail costs.

Fake Lithium Mod Drops Myth Stealer RAT - briefly
(hx) 08:40 AM CEST - Sep,07 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
A researcher published a teardown of a fake Minecraft optimization mod that installs Myth Stealer 3.2-FIX, a Java stealer and remote-access tool.

The sample posed as Lithium Extras 0.15.0+mc1.21.1 by “soder,” riding on CaffeineMC’s real Lithium project.

Most of the JAR acts like a working mod; one hidden module then downloads a second-stage file from Dropbox and writes it to `%APPDATA%MicrosoftWindowsjavaw.exe`.

That payload can steal browser passwords, cookies, and payment data, plus grab screenshots, clipboard text, and webcam frames.

There is no public victim count for this drop, so treat it as a confirmed sample, not a measured outbreak.

Get Lithium only from the official project — not random “extras” JAR!

Tests: DLSS 5 Costs 60% of RTX 5090 Speed at 4K - tech
(hx) 10:29 PM CEST - Sep,06 2026 - Post a comment / read (3)
Hardware Unboxed tested Nvidia’s new DLSS 5 neural rendering in NBA 2K27 without the 6X Multi Frame Generation used in Nvidia’s own charts.

On an RTX 5090 at 4K max settings, the game fell from 192 FPS without DLSS 5 to 76 FPS with it on - a 60% drop.

An RTX 5080 at the same 4K setup fell from 185 FPS to 53 FPS, a 71% cut.

Lowering in-game presets barely helped: the 5090 gained only 2 FPS when dropped from max to High, because DLSS 5 is a heavy post-upscale pass tied to output resolution.

Mid-range RTX 50 cards were much worse off; the 5060 Ti 16GB sat around 50 FPS at 1440p with DLSS 5, and cheaper cards missed 60 FPS even at 1080p.

C++ Creator: AI Code Is Buggier, Fatter, and Harder to Trust - briefly
(hx) 10:20 PM CEST - Sep,06 2026 - Post a comment / read (2)
C++ creator Bjarne Stroustrup said the AI-generated code he has seen in programming-language work has not been successful.

On The Peterman Pod he said those tools produce more bugs, more security holes, and bloated programs that use extra memory and are hard to validate.

He added that some senior developers who would have to check that output are starting to retire rather than re-check code that changes every time a prompt changes.

Stroustrup said current AI is not good at safety-critical or performance-critical software - the 10–20% of the world’s code he cares about — even if 70–80% of code sits outside that bar.

He recalled Edsger Dijkstra calling the idea of using natural language as a programming language idiotic, and said English is too ambiguous for the precision engineering needs.

The remarks are from Ryan Peterman’s May 18, 2026 interview, now recirculating:
1:28:51 — AI writing code

Ryan:[1:28:51] When I look at the industry today, more and more code is being written by machines than by humans. I feel like a lot of programming language design is thinking about how to make it amenable to humans solving problems and writing the code. I’m curious if you have any thoughts on whether you think programming language design will change if more and more of the code is written by models and machines.

Bjarne: [1:29:23] I think that in the field I’m mostly interested in, code will still be written by humans, and they will use abstraction. The examples I’ve seen of attempts for AI to generate code in this domain have not been successful. They generate more bugs, more security holes. They have bloated code, which pessimize again because you use more memory, and it’s hard to validate. The senior developers that would be needed to validate it have started to retire because they don’t want to deal with the validation of something that changes every time you make a change in your code or your prompts. Furthermore, a lot of the things I think about involve regulatory bodies for this validation. You have to be able to validate what you changed. When you make a change and the AIs, the tools change, even if you make a slight difference in the prompt, a lot of the code will change, and you have to check it again.

[1:30:08] I’ve seen some of them starting to retire because they don’t want to deal with the validation of something that changes every time you make a change in your code, in your prompts. Furthermore, a lot of the things I think about involve regulatory bodies for this validation. You have to be able to validate what you changed. When you make a change and the AIs, the tools change, even if you make a slight difference in the prompt, a lot of the code will change, and you have to check it again.

[1:30:47] All of the code that was generated knows more code generated than if it was written by humans. When a human makes a change, it will make a change that’s localized. You can look for the effects of that localized change. If an AI writes it, you don’t actually know where it’s changed. You have to try and figure that out. So if you’re doing something that has been done many times before, like writing a standard web app, what you say is correct.

[1:31:22] Also, AI is not useless. That’s not what I’m saying. It can be used to write documentation. Again, it has to be humanly validated, but it helps write things. It’s good at text. It’s not, at least now, good at safety-critical, performance-critical code. Now, let’s say that 70 or 80% of the world’s code doesn’t fit that pattern. But it’s that 10 or 20% of the code that I’m interested in. And there, it’s not there.

[1:32:09] And I don’t see it coming with the LLM model. Furthermore, when fed with training data, it has to be trained with old code. My job, as I see it, is to make sure people write new things and use new techniques that are improvements over the old code. I find that LLM-based code is imitating old code and getting old performance and old bugs again. Maybe you can improve that. I hear rumors of Bjarne apps being written that fit my writings, but even that is problematic because I’m not saying exactly the same as I did 20 years ago.

[1:33:06] But anyway, we’ll see. Also, even Dijkstra was looking into the possibility, and he claimed that the idea of having natural languages as the programming language was idiotic. He’s less polite than I am. I think that a language like English is very flexible, and what we say is often very ambiguous. We need a programming language that’s precise, that’s engineering, that’s math; it’s not English.

Hackers Exploiting MikroTik RouterOS Vulnerability in the Wild to Gain Complete Network Access - tech
(hx) 09:48 PM CEST - Sep,06 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
Attackers are actively exploiting an unauthenticated remote access flaw in MikroTik RouterOS, and network administrators worldwide are being urged to patch their devices immediately before compromise turns into a full network takeover.

MikroTik confirmed on September 3, 2026, that it had discovered a serious security vulnerability affecting RouterOS and had already shipped fixes across every release channel, including 7.25 beta 3, 7.24.2 stable, 7.23.4 long-term, and 6.49.21 long-term.

The vendor deliberately withheld technical specifics in its initial advisory, stating plainly that it was “not currently publishing detailed information” in order to give administrators time to update before attackers could reverse-engineer the flaw from public disclosure.

Despite that caution, exploitation began almost immediately, and forum users and researchers quickly pieced together the attack mechanics on their own.

In practical terms, if the SSH service is reachable from the internet or an untrusted network, the router is vulnerable until it receives the patch, with no additional credential theft or user interaction required.
Tim Berners-Lee: He Gave the Web Away - briefly

Tim Berners-Lee proposed the World Wide Web at CERN in 1989 and built HTTP, HTML and URLs. On 30 April 1993 CERN put the code in the public domain. No patent. No fee. Gopher, a rival from the University of Minnesota, tried licence fees the same year and faded. The “first trillionaire instead of Elon” line is a tweet, not a fact.

In June 2021 he sold an NFT of the original source as art at Sotheby’s for $5.4 million. The money went to causes he and his wife support. He invented the layer. He did not invent TCP, fibre, or the whole internet. He chose not to own the layer.

GTA 6 on PC Sooner? That's a Rumor, Not Rockstar - briefly
(hx) 12:28 AM CEST - Sep,06 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
Wccftech is repeating VGC journalist Andy Robinson: because PS5 and Xbox prices keep climbing, Rockstar *might* ship Grand Theft Auto 6 on PC in under a year after consoles. That is podcast chatter, not a date from Rockstar or Take-Two.

GTA 6 is still a console launch first (PS5 / Xbox Series, November 2026 window, $80 standard). Past ports took about a year (RDR2) to 19 months (GTA V).

Hardware inflation is real. A faster PC window is a guess.

White House Puts Policy in an Arcade - briefly
(hx) 01:18 PM CEST - Sep,05 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
The official White House site opened whitehouse.gov/arcade on Sept. 3, 2026 with five browser games: Flappy Bill, Build the Wall, Rio Run, Supply Line and Trump Savings Tycoon.

The games copy the feel of Tetris, Snake, Flappy Bird and Tapper and wrap border, school-lunch and :Trump Accounts" talking points in 8-bit graphics; the announcement video on X also riffed on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo boot screens.

That parody is what former Epic executive Joe Kreiner was needling when he wrote that "half the Microsoft legal team just spat out their 5pm cocktail" - a joke, not a filing.
"Build the Wall" is a "Tetris" knockoff that transforms the classic game into an effort to "Protect the border from the coming horde." In "Rio Run," which resembles the mobile favorite "Snake," an icon resembling Trump runs around gathering potential border crossers.

In "Supply Line," which looks like a condensed version of the arcade game "Tapper," food moves along an assembly line and you must reject items that don't meet "Make America Healthy Again" standards.

Two of the games take place over the skies of the nation's capital. In "Flappy Bill," an eagle carries a bill across the National Mall. In "Trump Savings Tycoon," your goal is to collect money flying through the air to "Fill your kids' Trump Accounts," the administration savings plan that offers $1,000 to every child born during Trump's term.

In a statement Friday, The Tetris Company said it "was not involved in the creation of 'Build the Wall' and did not authorize or license the Tetris brand or intellectual property for the game."

56k.rip Dials You Back to 1996 - Then Hangs Up - briefly
(hx) 11:36 AM CEST - Sep,05 2026 - Post a comment / read (4)
A working browser project at 56k.rip (https://56k.rip) recreates the full 1996 dial-up ritual: a fake desktop, Dial-Up Networking, the off-hook click, touch tones, and about twenty seconds of a real modem handshake.

Pick 14.4, 28.8 or 56k and the same page actually takes longer on the slower line, because every page is served against a real byte budget at that rate - photos sharpen line by line, downloads crawl or fail, and the call drops if someone "picks up the phone."

Behind the screech sits a tiny period web: guestbook, webring, classifieds, weather, minesweeper, paint, mail, chat, and a command prompt, with most sounds synthesized in the browser and pictures drawn in the old 216-color web-safe palette.

Nothing needs an account and nothing is stored off your machine. Turn the speakers on and try it at https://56k.rip.

I've been playing around on that website a bit-it's really a blast... so nostalgic. I'm actually wondering where I put my first US Robotics modem...

NVIDIA Hotfix 616.86 Kills Browser Flicker - tech
(hx) 10:16 AM CEST - Sep,05 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
NVIDIA Customer Care posted GeForce Hotfix driver 616.86 on September 4. It is a small patch on top of Game Ready driver 616.64, not a new Game Ready drop.

The official note lists three fixes. Browsers could flicker on some sites. After **616.56**, virtual displays would not create. RDP sessions could also go black after that same 616.56 build.

Those 616.56 problems were already showing up in the wild. Users reported desktop flicker, brief black screens, and broken virtual monitors used by remote-play tools. Some software vendors even told people to stay off 616.56. NVIDIA’s hotfix tickets for the last two bugs explicitly point back to 616.56.

A GeForce Hotfix is optional and short-QA. NVIDIA says it exists only to ship the three fixes faster. The same patches are supposed to land in the next full WHQL driver, after which 616.86 will be pulled. If you do not have flicker, a dead virtual display, or a black RDP session, 616.64 is the same driver minus these three tickets.

It is Windows 10/11 64-bit only. It does not show up in NVIDIA App. You download it from NVIDIA’s Customer Care article. After install, the App may still show an old driver date. That is normal for hotfixes.

This is not a new feature driver and not a Multi Frame Generation change. Replies on the tweet asking for 40-series MFG are unrelated to 616.86.

Another 7800X3D Burns on an ASUS Board - tech

A Bilibili repair video shows a Ryzen 7 7800X3D that swelled and burned on an ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Hero.

The chip’s underside is discolored and the socket pins in the middle are bent.

TechPowerUp says the board’s BIOS version was not confirmed, which matters because AMD’s 2023 fix was an AGESA cap on SoC voltage.

Similar X3D burns first piled up in April 2023.

This is one reported case, not proof that every 7800X3D is dying.

NVIDIA 616.64 Brings DLSS 5 to NBA 2K27 - tech

NVIDIA released GeForce Game Ready driver 616.64 on September 3, 2026.

The WHQL package is the launch driver for NBA 2K27 and turns on DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering on GeForce RTX 50 Series cards.

In the game, that option sits under Video Settings as “DLSS Neural Rendering.”

The same driver also prepares PCs for Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

NVIDIA says DLSS 5 uses artist-guided AI models for lighting and materials while keeping scanned player faces intact.

Microsoft is putting monthly limits on Xbox Cloud Gaming starting in November.

Game Pass subscribers will get:

-Ultimate: 15 hours/month

Those plans currently include unlimited cloud play.

Xbox says about 4% of subscribers will feel the change and that extra hours will be sold in the Xbox Store.

Players who don’t subscribe will also be able to buy cloud time and stream eligible games they already own.

Pricing and the exact November date are still coming; Xbox says rising cloud costs are the reason.

Builder Uses Astra to Run Talking Unreal Agents - briefly

Matt Shumer posted a September 3, 2026 clip of GPT-6 Astra building an Unreal Engine scene filled with Astra-powered agent characters.

He said he asked the new OpenAI model to create a world where those agents had to work together to survive, then later heard them talking in his living room.

OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra the same day as a limited rollout for coding, computer use, and other agent work.

Shumer’s own write-up calls the Unreal build a custom setup, not a finished OpenAI product, and notes long-running autonomy is still unsolved.

The talking-NPC clip is his demo, not an official OpenAI benchmark.
LTT Builds a $10K Ryzen and RTX 5090 Flagship PC - tech

Linus Tech Tips posted “We Built the BEST PC” on September 3, 2026, assembling what the channel called the fastest off-the-shelf rig it could buy this year.

The machine pairs AMD’s 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition with MSI’s limited RTX 5090 Lightning Z, a water-cooled 32GB card that can run an 800-watt or 1,000-watt BIOS.

AMD lists the CPU at 16 cores, 32 threads, and a 200-watt TDP, and the Lightning Z launched as a scarce flagship with dual power connectors and its own display.

LTT also used an ASRock X870E Taichi board, 64GB of G.Skill DDR5, a 2TB WD Black SN8100 SSD, and a 1,600-watt Seasonic PSU.

The “best PC” label and the roughly $10,000 total are the channel’s pitch, not an official ranking.

NVIDIA says DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering goes live September 3 at 9 p.m. Pacific in NBA 2K27. At launch it is limited to GeForce RTX 50-series cards and GeForce NOW. The first public file came from an NBA 2K27 early-access build; modders then injected it into Cyberpunk 2077 and other games.

Those unofficial Cyberpunk tests are not a studio integration and have no NVIDIA artist masks. One leaked-mod benchmark on an RTX 5090 at 4K Quality fell from 63 to 42 frames per second.

NVIDIA added developer sliders and masks after the March preview so studios can limit what the model retouches.
