WORKAROUND #1
1. There is a tool called WUMT (Windows Update Mini Tool) created by members of MDL community. Download here http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/windows_update_minitool.html
2. Download Display Driver Uninstaller DDU
http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html
Also download official Nvidia Display driver from
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
3. Disable Ethernet or Wifi (Very Important)
4. Run DDU and clean previous faulty Nvidia driver in Safe Mode. Reboot to normal windows.
5. Optional: Run WUMT set update to "Notification Mode". If you don't want any updates to auto-install.
6. Optional: Uncheck the Driver Box.
7. Install Official WHQL driver obtained from Nvidia website
8. Enable Ethernet or Wifi.
Done. Follow exactly in order. You can use WUMT to set updates to automatically after this drama is done and Nvidia driver you installed will stick.
PRO TIP: WUMT can also be used to hide an update or driver. Just check the entry and click on H button in the left pane.

WORKAROUND #2
To prevent Windows 10 Windows Update from installing a driver update:
- Go here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-reinstalling-in-window
- Download the "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter package, on that page
- Use it to hide a particular driver update from being installed by Windows Update
So, my steps are:
- Disable network
- Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU), in regular mode
- Install 385.41
- Enable network
- Use the "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter to prevent Windows Update from updating that driver.
- This allows everything else to be updated as normal. |
