A long-running fan project called Doom II for Doom 3 has released an updated demo that rebuilds classic Doom II maps inside id Software’s 2004 engine. The mod keeps the original level layouts and music while adding Doom 3’s darker lighting, dynamic shadows, and modern 3D presentation. Version 0.29 is still a work-in-progress demo with only the first few maps fully playable. The project has been in development since around 2010 and recently resurfaced around QuakeCon 2026. The Disposable Heroes mod team, has been working hard to bring back the original feel of Doom ][, so far the 10 maps have been re-created, by hand, and even monster the monster layout's have been preserved (or enhanced) for all 4 skill levels:

An XDA writer upgraded his NAS to 10 Gigabit Ethernet and quickly found the real bottleneck was not the network.

With only two 20TB hard drives running in SHR (RAID 1 mirror), write speeds topped out around 259–290 MB/s — just a fraction of 10GbE capacity.

Sustained reads also stayed near 274 MB/s because a single client cannot benefit from mirrored drives.

The NAS CPU and RAM were not the limiting factors in this setup.

To fully use 10GbE speeds, the author notes that more drives or SSDs would be required.

I’m writing this more out of curiosity, because this is probably something all my long-time readers already know. I don’t know what that person was expecting—that upgrading the LAN would make it run 10 times faster? LOL. I have a Synology myself, and it’s not that fast even with SSD caching. But for what I do, it’s enough for me (streaming movies from the web and some basic work with documents). However, when I really need speed, it starts to get pretty expensive :-( You need pretty expensive NVMe drives like the Samsung 9100 Pro, Kingston Fury Renegade G5, or Crucial T705. And that fast 4TB Samsung currently costs 825 euros, which is outrageous.

Even when you buy these super-expensive SSDs, you have to have realistic expectations—that is, with 4 × Samsung 9100 Pro in a well-configured mirrored ZFS setup + 25GbE networking, you can achieve:

Sequential reads: 8–12+ GB/s
Sequential writes: 6–10 GB/s
Excellent random performance for many concurrent users

GameGPU recommends buying a used RTX 4090 for around $1,100 instead of a new RTX 5090.

According to their tests, the RTX 4090 is only about 35% slower than the flagship RTX 5090.

They note that new RTX 5090 cards currently cost between $5,500 and $7,500, while used ones sit around $2,300.

The site argues that the 4090’s performance combined with 2x frame generation is more than enough for most users.

Higher frame generation on the 5090 does not make up for the massive price difference because base frame rates are not boosted enough.

GameGPU concludes the used 4090 remains the smarter purchase while new high-end cards stay scarce and expensive.

GameGPU tested the Gears of War E-Day multiplayer beta at native 2K resolution and found no AMD Radeon card delivered playable frame rates.

The flagship Radeon RX 7900 XTX averaged just 21 FPS, while the newer RX 9070 XT managed only 22 FPS.

Even the NVIDIA RTX 4080 clearly outperformed all tested AMD models.

According to the results, AMD users need FSR upscaling to reach smooth performance at 2560x1440.
